The early offseason programs have officially come to an end, with the conclusion of mandatory minicamps. Now, with the official schedules released and rosters looking ready to go, fans and pundits alike are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2023-24 NFL season.
With that being said, it seems like the perfect time to take a look at the odds for the 2023-24 NFL MVP award, and make some far-too-early predictions as well.
First we'll run through the favorites to win, our best picks and predictions, then we'll list the full odds courtesy of DratKings Sportsbook.
The Favorite: Patrick Mahomes (+700)
Since winning his first MVP in 2018, Patrick Mahomes has been a bookmaker favorite, finishing the preseason atop the MVP odds board in three of the past four years. So, it's no surprise that the reigning MVP is the favorite to keep his crown next season.
Last season, the star QB took the Kansas City Chiefs to their second Super Bowl victory since becoming a starter, and even beat some of the top rated defenses on one leg, including the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mahomes is usually a pretty safe bet as he's in the conversation for MVP almost every year, but with the lowest odds of +700 there's not much value in taking the safest bet. If you're a fan of futures betting and trust KC to keep their form, Mahomes could be your pick.
The Runner Up: Joe Burrow (+750)
The Bengals have come within touching distance of an NFL championship for two years now. They lost to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI and failed to beat the Chiefs in the championship round last season. At some point, you'd expect them to take it all the way. They certainly have the talent and after putting together some impressive season records, falling at the last hurdle has been their only issue.
Joe Burrow is only in his third year in the league and certainly seems like a generational talent already. If he can keep improving, he'll be well within the conversation for MVP, especially if Cincy take it all the way next year. And as second favorite to take home the award, the sportsbooks definitely agree that he's in with a shot.
Potential Contender: Aaron Rodgers (+1600)
Aaron Rodgers' move to the New York Jets has been the talk of the town this year. The former Green Bay Packer quarterback and future Hall of Famer, has moved to the Big Apple to lead a team of young stars that are now 7th favorites to win the Super Bowl next year. If Rodgers can achieve that feat, he'll undoubtedly be a top contender to win MVP next year.
The Jets have added tons of talent to their roster over the past few years, including two players that won defensive and offensive rookie of the year last season. Rodgers also brought Allen Lazard with him to New York, which will only help his 2023-24 campaign.
If we see the green and white make the playoffs, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them lift the Lombardi Trophy, and if Rodgers is the one that leads them there, my money is on him winning the NFL MVP next year.
Our Prediction: Jalen Hurts (+1100)
There are plenty of top contenders for MVP next season, and it's certainly tough to count out Mahomes, Burrow and a slew of other big names, but Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are my favorite bet to take things all the way in the 2024 postseason.
After a ridiculous draft, in which they picked up Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, the Philly defense will be scarier than ever. And with the likes of Jason Kelce returning for yet another year of dominating the trenches, the Eagles offense should see no setbacks either.
Hurts finished last season with an insanely impressive statline of and that was only his 3rd year as a starter... The potential to grow even further within an immensely skilled offense could drive him a 4,500 passing-yard, 30 passing-touchdown season, all while producing insane stats in the run game. .
He was pretty much set to take things all the way before a shoulder injury cost him two games and potentially the award. Hurts now has an even stronger supporting cast and has established himself as a top-five quarterback in the league.
Put simply, as incredible as he already is, it's scary to think we still haven't seen him at his best. At +1100, Hurts has by far the most value on the board and is my pick for 2024 NFL MVP.
Our Underdog Pick: Christian McCaffrey (+8000)
Now, it is very rare to see anyone other than a quarterback win MVP, but if there's any other player that can do it next year, it's Christian McCaffrey.
In my books, he's the most talented running back in the league and although the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo seems like a big hit to San Francisco, I believe it only opens up an opportunity for McCaffrey to steal the limelight.
Trey Lance will likely be leading the offense in the upcoming season, but he's not expected to have a hugely dominant year. So, if the 49ers defense holds strong, and McCaffrey is the only offensive outlet, we could certainly see him carry the team through the regular season and deep into the playoffs.
If San Fran do make a deep run into the postseason, I would expect McCaffrey to be the biggest part of their success.
